Edit requests (plain and simple)

I'd like to create a copy-paste edit request instruction that uses a template that is dead simple for both the editors making the requests and those answering them. Something that already has instructions and the actually usually-needed parameters included in the template copy-paste. Nothing that isn't absolutely needed in 99% of cases. Nothing that creates a canned response. Can someone help me write that?

What I'm looking for is something along the lines of Help:Archiving (plain and simple) that doesn't require any learning. Just copy-paste and follow the included instructions. valereee (talk) 16:21, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Valereee: in general the ER process is:
  1. Click "View Source" on the page you are reading that you can't edit
  2. Click the giant blue "Submit an edit request" button.
It will lead you to a page that looks like this that includes the ER directions. — xaosflux Talk 16:56, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux, thanks! And that happens for pages that aren't protected, too? (In the case of a COI editor.) And edit requests made that way give clearer instructions to the editor responding, also? So maybe I create a page at WP:Edit requests (plain and simple) that says exactly that, and point people at it?
The impetus was that I am working at Special:Permalink/1072785891#Proposed changes: Opening paragraphs and I couldn't tell from the linked instructions at that template how I should indicate that I was working at that edit request. I wasn't accepting it, I wasn't declining it, but I was answering it. And for that particular template, the instruction page is quite dense and full of instructions for communicating detailed info about the resolution and yet doesn't tell me to simply insert |ans=yes into the template to take it out of the category. I assume because whoever wrote those instructions assumed that anyone reading them already knows that basic bit? :) Speaking as a person who experiences a small thrill of accomplishment every time I use a template correctly for the first time, no such assumptions should be made. :) valereee (talk) 17:12, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So, that won't work for the COI use-case, since you won't fall in to the "view source" option; the template to use is: Template:Request edit - I'm not sure how to make the best directions for COI editors. — xaosflux Talk 17:22, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I believe that's the template this user used. And the instructions it links to are what got me here in the first place. Maybe what's needed is to fix that template so it doesn't link to that instruction page? valereee (talk) 17:24, 20 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Request: Link to Article

Hi! I've handled some edit request (both COI and SP/EP), and I noticed that this template does not link to the article for which the edit is requested. In contrast, other request templates such as Template:Edit semi-protected and Template:Edit extended-protected include that: "It is requested that an edit be made to the extended-confirmed-protected article at Article Name." It's quite a handy feature, and I don't see any real reason against implementing it for this request template as well. I would have loved to provide a textdiff suggestion, but I am completely clueless about how templates work, and looking at the source code here didn't help. Thanks in advance! Actualcpscm (talk) 10:15, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done Should be, anyway. Izno (talk) 18:45, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Izno, thanks a bunch, it looks to be working great! If I may take the liberty to be a little bit annoying, could you make an analogous change for the other versions of the template, i.e., {{request edit|R}} and {{request edit|N}}? I can't gauge how much work that would require, but I am very thankful for your help :) Actualcpscm (talk) 22:33, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request 24 April 2023

The feature that User:Izno kindly implemented after my request (see above) breaks here, though I'm not sure why. Maybe it has something to do with the ampersand? I wish I could provide a textdiff for a fix, but my technical understanding just is not on that level. Actualcpscm (talk) 16:03, 24 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is supposed to provide the link in the answered form? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:11, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@MSGJ Sorry for the confusion, it breaks on the talk page of this article when it's not answered; the link doesn't work correctly. See this version. Actualcpscm (talk) 10:16, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I see the problem. It is trying to link to [1] which doesn't work. I'll let Izno look at this I think :) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:20, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Done Maybe done, maybe not? :) Izno (talk) 15:23, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The link in the edit request here still doesn't work, it appears to include this character after the ampersand: ⌸. Honestly it's an edge case, I feel like the effort-reward ratio is off here, so don't worry :) Actualcpscm (talk) 15:36, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To editor Actualcpscm: reopened that edit request you linked, here, and it worked for me. Took me directly to Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute – isn't that what it's supposed to do? Appears to me that editor Izno has fixed it with the {{Full url:}} function. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'er there 16:33, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, works now. I suppose it had still cached the old template when I tested it there, my bad. Thanks a bunch to everyone taking the time to deal with this! Actualcpscm (talk) 16:37, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"That user has an actual or apparent conflict of interest."

Is there a version of the template without this part? Trade (talk) 02:10, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This template is specifically intended for that use, though, so I don't see why that would be necessary (?). There are separate templates for making requests in other cases where an editor is not able to edit a page themselves, such as the protection-related request templates (see an example right above this section). Requested move 27 June 2023

Template:Request editTemplate:COI edit request – This template gets (mis)used fairly regularly, as indicated by edits such as Special:Diff/1162140876, and there have been previous (1, 2) discussions on this talk page that never went anywhere about the matter. Basically, "request edit" makes the request sound like "I can't do this myself and need help", while it actually is saying "I have a COI so I shouldn't edit the article and need help". These two things are, largely, different kettles of fish, and the name should reflect usage. There are a lot of redirects here and I just picked the one that seemed easiest to remember.
