Bot

I believe I talked to you on IRC last night. Do you think you could do a task with your bot for me? Bearingbreaker92 04:13, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Sure, but only if it is non-contoversial, otherwise I will have to seek approval first. Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 04:20, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Simply making a bunch of talk pages and putting a template on them. That wouldnt be too controversial would it? Bearingbreaker92 04:23, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Nope, that'd be fine, what I need is a list of pages (or a category, or a template that can be found on all the pages) and the template to go on them. Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 04:26, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I need {{WP Tennis}} to be put on every talk page of these categories.

Australian Opens by year

French Open (tennis) by year

Wimbledon Championships by year

U.S. Opens by year (tennis)

Thanks a bunch Bearingbreaker92 14:40, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Sure thing, I'll start up the bot right after I finish frantically updating our Australian political articles.[1] :D Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 23:57, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
My normal bot had a bug that was keeping it from doing that, but I wrote up a quick replacement to at least semi-automate it (though I still had to hit the save button on all of them .. so it's nowhere near as automated as I'd like) Every page in the above categories had the template added just now by me, except the following four, which already had it:
  1. Talk:2006 Australian Open
  2. Talk:2006 Australian Open - Men's Singles
  3. Talk:2006 Australian Open - Women's Singles
  4. Talk:2007 Australian Open
Anyway, any more categories you'd like done, don't hesitate to ask me :D Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 11:14, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the consideration you gave to my RfA. To be chosen as an administrator requires a high level of confidence by a broad section of the community. Although I received a great deal of support, at this time I do not hold the level of confidence required, and the RfA did not pass. You were one of the oppose votes, and raised concerns. Travel Victoria photo site

I note you've removed a link from the Benalla, Victoria page to the Travel Victoria website which displays photos of Benalla, and I get the impression you've removed similar links from other articles. What is the problem with these links? Their only function is to provide a link to photographic images of the town in question which can't be displayed on the Wikipedia page because they're copyright. Do you consider the link to be more advertising than informative? If so, why?GSTQ 00:37, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I considered it to be advertising. I reasoned that anybody who added the same link to a massive number of articles is probably advertising, and it's best to discourage people using Wikipedia to draw hits to their site by removing the links. If you haven't already, you may want to take a look at some relevant guidelines (particularly the last item in point #5 on this list) Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 09:21, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Point #5 is contingent with point #6. Moreover, the relevant page of Travel Victoria photos has been selected in each case, hasn't it? It's not all the same page. You wouldn't say that adding an AllMusicGuide link to a large number of articles is spam, because the AllMusicGuide review is a standard link to include on the page of an album. Have a look at a few. In this case, the additions certainly weren't spam per se, because the link has not been added indiscriminately to articles. I haven't bothered to go and look at the history myself, but I'm guessing that they are all pages of Victorian towns. You didn't answer my question why you consider it advertising either. I've told you why I don't consider it to be advertising, and I'll re-state my reasons. Travel Victoria has a lot of photos on just about all the towns in the state. They're good photos, of the most important buildings and other features of each town. The Travel Victoria page in question may link to accommodation facilities &c. in the town, but there's no Wikipedia policy I'm aware of that says links should not be made to pages on which there are links to advertising pages. I imagine such a policy would rule out most of the external links currently extant.GSTQ 22:31, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Most of the time, if one user adds links to the same website to 130+ articles, it would appear to be obvious spamming and somebody would revert. If you disagree with me doing that, then I invite you to undo the edits I made. I'll agree with you that the site does have useful content, and that it does add more to a lot of the articles. However, a lot of the articles already have pictures, so perhaps the links should only appear in picture-less articles? Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 02:58, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

One day, when I can be bothered, I may go through all the articles and add the links again. I'm just glad you didn't make it up to Wangaratta!GSTQ 23:50, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

email

Thanks Michael. I replied to your email. I was just wondering if I could ask you for a favour. The talk page of this IP User:202.149.82.28 says it's a confirmed open proxy/zombie computer. It was unblocked a minute ago for Adam Carr. He says it's an internet cafe in Indonesia. Could you please tell me if it is still an open proxy? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks Michael. Cheers, Sarah 10:45, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

It was previously an open proxy, I can say that for sure. It is listed in some open proxy lists as being open on port 8080. (which it isn't currently). It looks like it was previously misconfigured, as it is a proxy (proxy2.sat.net.id) (note that .id is Indonesia), but the internet café seems to have fixed the problem, as I can't connect through it. So no, not an open proxy anymore :-) Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 11:19, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Advice sought

Hi Michael, I am here on behalf of a new user Nirajrm. He recently applied for a name change which was rejected as the userpage already existed (as you reported)[5]. However, the userpage was created by the same user by mistake. I have now deleted that as there seems to be no creation log for User:Niraj. As a CHU clerk, you would have a better idea about this. Do you think he can re apply now for a name change? — Lost(talk) 16:26, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

This is an odd case, I think I'll have to explain further. Whilst this and this would make it seem as if the account doesn't exist, it infact does. Accounts made before the new user log was implemented, such as Brion VIBBER's (or Niraj's) can't be found in the log, even though they exist. They can however be found in the user list, which is what we use at WP:CHU to check. If Nirajrm still wants a new username he'll need to apply for a usurp, which takes some time unfortunately. Cheers --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 22:59, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

My Signature

Hello, I have read WP:SIG:

If you are asked to change your signature, please avoid interpreting a polite request as an attack. As Wikipedia is based on working together in harmony, both parties should work together to find a mutually acceptable solution.

and I will, the guideline also goes on to say:

  • Markup such as <big> tags (which produce big text), or line breaks (<br /> tags) are to be avoided, since they disrupt the way that surrounding text displays
  • Be sparing with superscript or subscript. In some cases, this type of script can also affect the way that surrounding text is displayed
  • Avoid making your signature so small that it is difficult to read

Obviously if you think that there is a problem, then I'm more than happy to resolve it with you. Right, here are the options:

Cheers, Dfrg.msc 04:15, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

Size 5 is (at least in my opinion) far too big, but I'd be happy if you'd be willing to change it to size 4. (ideally you could make it the standard size, but I respect the fact you want a large-text signature) Cheers. --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 05:39, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
Size 4 cramps it up. Should I lose the script? Dfrg.msc 23:42, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

By complete chance, I got that message while I was on a public computer which seems to have far more fonts than mine. On my fairly old computer, it shows up as on the right. [You can see why I was a bit annoyed at the size] On the public computer I was at however, it looked quite nice =) - Is there another (perhaps more common) script you could substitute it for? I'm writing to you in regards to a message i recieved from you apon logging in. I have logged into wikipedia here from work, obviously someone here has been stirring up trouble with wikipedia.

Do we have details as to what they exactly did and usernames? or was it all done Anonymously?

Cheers,

Matt.

All the edits were made anonymously, so there is no username I can give you. However, I can give you this summary of what's happened:
  • Added 'LOL' to the Peter Brock article [7]
  • Replaced Big Bang with "First, there was nothing; then it exploded." [8]
  • Another edit, this time to Comet [9]
  • This was the edit which I left the message about (adding 2 links to an Acer-related article[10]) - Which I reverted because the IP reverse-resolves to 'mailtoo.acer.com.au'[11]
Other than those 4 edits, it's been all positive edits from your IP, for a list of edits take a look here. I hope this helps. --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 06:10, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Name Change Response Per Your Request

Just confirming this account is the one who emailed you about having my user name changed from Mickfinn, which is just a typo, to MickFinn. If you need anything else, let me know.

Thanks,

My Username

I hear you can change the format of usernames? can you please change mine to "bboyskidz"? I don't like that first capital... Thanks, Bboyskidz 03:02, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

I'd like to help out with that, but unfortunately there's two things stopping me. 1) Only these 24 users can change usernames, and I'm not one of them. 2) it is impossible at this time to have a username with a lowercase fist letter (there's a small section about that here). Cheers --Michael Billington (talkcontribs) 05:24, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
no worries. I managed to change my signature... I'm happy with that.bBoy_sKiDz(talk|contribs) 04:14, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

VegaDark's Request for Adminship

MichaelBillington/Archive4

Thank you for supporting my RfA. It was successful at a unanimous 52/0/0. I hope I can live up to the kind words expressed of me there, and hope to now be more of an asset to the community with access to the tools. Please feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you have any suggestions for me in the future. Thanks again! VegaDark 07:16, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
