Zeitgeist (The Smashing Pumpkins album)

Zeitgeist (ⓘ) is the official sixth album (excluding the freely internet-distributed Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music) by The Smashing Pumpkins. It will be the first album to be released by the band since two of its original members, Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, reunited in 2006. It is as of yet unclear whether the other two original members of the band, James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky, will appear on the album. The album is produced by Roy Thomas Baker, and the band will also be working with producer Terry Date.[1] Pitchfork Media reported that the album is set to be released on July 7, 2007.[2] It will be the band's first release on Reprise Records.[3]
In early December, four alleged demos from the sessions were released on file-sharing networks. They were quickly revealed to be a hoax. Spin later reported that they were recordings by British band Amy Blue.[4] However, Billy Corgan did reveal four new songs during a Los Angeles club show that may end up on the album.[1]
Development
The first mention of a Smashing Pumpkins reunion was in a full-page advertisement bought by Billy Corgan in the June 21, 2005 issue of Chicago Tribune, announcing his intentions to reunite the band.[5] Later that year the reunion was made official,[6] and in 2006 the band began recording material.[7]
Although only Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin officially reunited, they may be joined by others. Melissa Auf der Maur has stated that "My services are always there to play my favorite songs. If D'arcy [Wretzky] is not available, I'm always happy to be second in line."[8] Ex-Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery was also once rumored to be connected to the reunion.[9][10]
Jimmy Chamberlin has called the album "Magnificent" said of the album's development that "We are moving along nicely in the studio. [Billy Corgan] pulled off a magnificent guitar symphony last night and it is still ringing in my ears this morning. Eight guitars resonating in one big harmonic handshake! And the drums...........of course!"[11]
