PARUTHIYUR
Paruthiyur is a calm and tiny village on the northern banks of Kudamuruti River, near Sengalipuram, in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu.
Due to the poisonous flames of Raghu, Surya, the Sun God had once lost His facial beauty. It occurred on a solar eclipse day. The Sun God prayed to Lord Siva from this place and regained His charm and brightness. 'Sun' in Tamil is called Parithi. As Parithi Worshipped here, this place is called Paruthiyur. In colloquial usage it has become Paruthiyur.
Lord Siva took the poison that emanated while churning the milk-sea, to protect the world and again blessed the Sun God from the evil effects of poisonous flames of Raghu in this Holy place. As such the principal deity in the Siva temple is called ' VISHAHARESWARAR'.
Adhi Varadarajar is gracing with 'Prayoga-Chakra". This chakra was sent to protect Ambarisha, a Vishnu devotee, from the curse of Durruvasa, the famous saint. Panchaloka idols of this temple are very ancient and more than 1000 years old. Kalyana Varadarajar another Vishnu is also gracing the devotees from the same Shrine.
Brahmashree Krishna Sasthrigal,a renowned Ramayana Discourse scholar had spent all his earnings for the renovation of this temple. He and his son Sri Pattabirama Sastrigal performed Kumbabishegam in 1905 and 1945 respectively. In the year 1985, Salem Auditor performed Kumbabishegam Sri P. Nataraja Iyer, Sri A.N.Krishnamurthy Iyer, and Sri K.V.Ramani Iyer. In 1991, due to the tireless efforts of Sri K.V.Ramani Iyer, renovation and Kumbabishegam of Siva temple was performed.
Recently with the blessings of Sri Sankarachariyas of Kanchi Kamakodi Mutt and Maharanyam Sri Muralidhara Swamigal, renovations are done to all the temples. Paruthiyur kainkarya Trust.[1]
