Jennie Kim (Korean: 김제니; born January 16, 1996), also known by the mononym Jennie, is a South Korean rapper, singer, and model. She debuted as the main rapper and vocalist of girl group Blackpink in August 2016, under YG Entertainment.
Life and career
1996–2015: Early life and career
Jennie Kim was born on January 16, 1996, in Seoul, South Korea.[2][3] At the age of 9, she was sent abroad to study at ACG Parnell College in New Zealand. In 2006, she appeared in the MBC special documentary "English, Must Change to Survive" and spoke about her experiences with the language and her life in New Zealand.[4] In 2010, she moved back to South Korea and participated in an audition held by YG Entertainment, later successfully joining the label as a trainee.[5]
In 2012, she featured on labelmate Lee Hi's song Special and made an appearance in Big Bang's G-Dragon's music video That XX. In 2013, she featured on G-Dragon's song Black and GG Be by Seungri.[6]
2016–present: Blackpink and solo debut
In August 2016, she debuted as a member of the girl group Blackpink. The group has released one studio album, Blackpink in Your Area, as well as three extended plays, Blackpink, Square Up and Kill This Love.
In mid-October 2018, an announcement of Kim's official solo debut was made.[7] In the midst of preparation for her debut, it was decided that her single "Solo" would first be revealed at Blackpink's In Your Area tour in Seoul ahead of release on November 12.[8] "Solo" became the most viewed music video by a female K-pop solo artist of all time and in the first 24 hours of release.[9][10] In South Korea, "Solo" claimed the number one spot on the Digital and Streaming charts on Gaon Chart for two consecutive weeks.[11] Kim later received her first-ever music show win as a solo artist on SBS' Inkigayo on November 25.[12]
In April 2019, Kim became the first K-pop solo artist to perform at Coachella.[13]
Other ventures
Endorsements
In June 2018, Kim became Chanel Korea's ambassador and attended the launch of "Les Eaux De Chanel" Photocall held at the Hippodrome de Clairefontaine in Deauville, France.[14][15] In October, she attended her first Chanel fashion show during Paris Fashion Week and sat front row next to Pharrell Williams and Pamela Anderson.[16] In March 2019, Chanel announced Jennie as Chanel's Global House Ambassador.[17]
In January 2019, Hera, a South Korean luxury beauty brand owned by Amorepacific Corporation, announced that Kim has been selected as their new model alongside actress Jun Ji-hyun.[18]

When Kim first started rapping, she studied artists like Lauryn Hill and TLC.[19] Kim has stated that her main influence is Rihanna.[20]
Impact and influence
In 2018, she ranked second in Most Favorite Idols survey conducted annually by Gallup Korea which involves 1,500 Korean men and women aged 13 to 29 as respondents.[21][22]
Jennie was awarded by Instagram as the "Most Loved Account of 2018" in South Korea, based on the number of views and likes received by Instagram Stories and posts that were shared this year.[23][24]
