The Mont Saint-Michel island monastery in Normandy hosted the start of the Tour's opening stage
On 24 November 2014 the race organizers, Amaury Sport Organisation, announced that the 2016 Tour de France would begin in the department of Manche. This is the first time ever that the Tour began in this department.[9][10]In December, details about the opening stages were released. The first stage was due to start at the foot of Mont Saint-Michel and then headed north on generally flat roads before ending on an access road to Utah Beach in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, to commemorate the D-Day landings. The second stage starts in Saint-Lô and, after a series of small climbs reaches Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. There, the riders face the Côte de la Glacerie, which is 1.9 km (1 mi) long and has sections at 14%. Finally, stage 3 was announced to start in Granville.[11] In January 2015 the organisers confirmed that the race would visit Andorra, for the fifth time in history; after the 1964, 1993, 1997 and 2009 editions.[12] The principality was due to host a stage finish, rest day and stage start.
The route for the 2016 Tour de France was unveiled by race director Christian Prudhomme on 20 October 2015 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris.[13] After the start in Manche, the parcours headed south, through Angers and Limoges, where the stages were due to end in sprints. The fifth stage was seen as the first opportunity for GC contenders; it featured two second category Massif Central climbs and had a hilly conclusion. Stage 6 headed to Montauban before the entrance to the Pyrenees in Stage 7. This mountain range also hosted two further stages: a rollercoaster stage 8 and the finish in Andorra in stage 9.

A total of €2,295,850 will be awarded in cash prizes in the race.[21] The overall winner of the general classification received €500,000, with the second and third placed riders getting €200,000 and €100,000 respectively; all finishers of the race will be awarded with money.[22] The holders of the classifications will benefit on each stage they lead; the final winners of the points and mountains will be given €25,000, while the best young rider and most combative rider will get €20,000.[23] The team classification winners will be given €50,000.[24] €11,000 will be given to the winners of each stage of the race, with smaller amounts given to places 2–20.[22] There were also three special awards each with a prize of €5000. The Souvenir Jacques Goddet, given to the first rider to pass Goddet's memorial at the summit of the Col du Tourmalet on stage eight, the Souvenir Henri Desgrange, given to first rider to pass the summit of the highest climb in the Tour, the Port d'Envalira on stage ten, and the Prix Bernard Hinault, given to the rider that ascends the Côte de Domancy on stage eighteen.[25]Thibaut Pinot won the Jacques Goddet and Rui Costa the Henri Desgrange.[26][27]
