Tarun Saikia (Assamese: তৰুণ শইকীয়া) is the first mountaineer from Assam to scale Mount Everest successfully. He scaled the highest peak on 18 May 2013. Few days later on 24 May, another Assamese Manish Kumar Deka had conquered Everest. In 1969, first expedition to the Everest from Assam had begun. That time two Assamese mountaineers, Rohini Kumar Bhuyan and Atanu Prasad Baruah had attempted to scale the highest peak, but were unsuccessful. [1]
