Windows reported number of packets vs packet sniffers
Does anyone know why packet sniffers report about 5x more packets than MS Windows "Local Area Connection Status? 194.83.139.136 (talk) 11:13, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Needs a solution to prevent packet sniffers getting in a network.
Self explanatory, really.
Network General isn't a sniffer
Network General is a maker of packet sniffers, not a sniffer itself. Guy Harris 01:47, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

Ethereal
Ethereal is now known as Wireshark. -- N3X15 ( Scream · Contribs) 23:58, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Title
Why does 'Packet Sniffer' redirect to 'Packet sniffer'? Shouldn't it be the other war 'round? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Joeldipops (talk • contribs) 17:11, 5 June 2007 (UTC).
- No. "Packet sniffer" is not a proper name, it's a category of software, so it's not capitalized. Guy Harris 20:16, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Microsoft Network Monitor
Why Omit Microsoft NetMon? NetMon III does a better job of cracking MS protocols than Wireshark... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.108.217.94 (talk • contribs) 13:02, 11 June 2007 (UTC).
- Because there's no Wikipedia page for it. All the links to external pages were removed in this change. Create a page for NetMon if you want it to be mentioned here. Guy Harris 20:16, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
Adding appropriate banners
Wanted to add something like these: {{WikiProject Internet}} {{WikiProject Software}} Both seem to be relevant to the topic of the article concerned. 88.105.37.22 (talk) 09:40, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
decoding
In the lead paragraph, shouldn't the term "decodes" refer/link to the opposite of encoding (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code) rather than to the cryptographic definition? In my experience, sniffers "un-encode" the encoded bits routinely and only rarely, if ever, do they "un-encrypt" packets.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrklaney (talk • contribs) 17:09, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
- There are analyzers that do un-encrypt some packets when they can, but, yes, "decodes" in the sentence in question refers to showing the values of individual fields; I've expanded that sentence to make it clear, and removed the link to cryptography. Guy Harris (talk) 17:34, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Merge from Packet capture
Packet capture does not appear to be a separate topic from Packet analyzer. All the independent references given in Packet capture also talk about analysis. -—Kvng 14:24, 19 January 2013 (UTC) Ankur Mhatre agress with this.
