Priscilla Star Diaz (born on 1994 in Harlem, New York) is an American rapper, actress, and former beauty pageant contestant, best known by her stage name P-Star. She is most notable for her role as Jessica Ruiz in the 2009 version of The Electric Company.
Biography
Diaz and her older sister Solsky started out life in a foster home until their father gained custody of the girls, and the three moved to the Bronx. After their father suffered a series of health setbacks, the family moved to Harlem, where P-Star discovered that she could "spit fire". Soon she won the Citywide Hip Hop Competition, the youngest female to enter the competition.
In early 2010, P-Star was the subject of a documentary titled P-Star Rising. The documentary chronicles the life of a young hip-hop performer as the vehicle for her father's unfulfilled ambitions. P-Star Rising was filmed by Gabriel Noble of Noble Arts and Tru Films. P-Star Rising premiered February 9, 2010 on PBS (Los Angeles' public television station) via the show Independent Lens.
Diaz currently plays one of the main characters on The Electric Company, a show on PBS Kids Go. The show premiered on January 23, 2009. Jessica Ruiz, played by P-Star, is a fourteen-year-old girl with total aural recall, allowing her to replay and display speech as text.
P-Star released her first album Welcome to my Show in 2008. The album also included a promotional DVD with live interviews and videos.
In 2007, P-Star released her first workout DVD for kids entitled P-Star Workout DVD—Exercise Your Body and Mind Volume 1. The debut exercise DVD features Young B (of Chicken Noodle Soup fame) and Darkchild Records artist Megan Rochell. The DVD was featured on New York Daily News twice. Other mentions of her DVD include Los Angeles Times Calendar, Good Day New York, KTLA, New Jersey 1, and Live.com.
P-Star released a mix tape experiencing some success with her first single, "Biggie Bounce". The video for this song was released in 2007. She subsequently became the Opening Voice of Hot 97’s Angie Martinez Show on New York City radio.
In 2005, she was featured as the lead vocalist on Reggaeton Ninos Vol. 1, which sold more than 150,000 copies, and Vol. 2, which sold over 50,000 copies. Her television appearances include Sábado Gigante, Primer Impacto, One Nation, and the Latin Grammy Awards.
P-Star attended the Jo Lee Dance and Performance Arts School and received acting lessons at the City Lights Youth Theater. Since then, she has appeared in the Off-Broadway production of Take the Train to Maine at the Second Stage Theater. In a short film, 2005s Sita, she played a little girl dying of AIDS. During that year, she also appeared in Hijinks, a Candid Camera-style show for kids on Nick at Nite featuring Susan Sarandon. P-Star shot a pilot for her own show on Nickelodeon, P-Star and Angela. Additionally, she has finalized a second pilot, The Adventures of Super Jane.
P-Star received the "Latina of Distinction" award in 2005. The same year, the NYC Dept. of Education honored her with The Legendary Hip Hop Pioneers for the Future of Hip Hop award, recognizing her for her positive presence in the community.
As a young artist she has stated, "To do this, you have to make sure you want it—not because you can rap and you think you're good, but because you want it, and I truly do want this. This is my heart right now. This is my love. And I don't ever want to do anything else." She also did two Japanese and English Songs in 2011
