The narrator encounters a younger version of himself (el otro).the older is in Cambridge in 1969, while the younger thinks he is in Geneva at the Rhône river in 1918. he younger doesn’t believe they are the same person, the older goes onto recall things from his past, and the younger’s present, like when he moved, and the things that were in his room that he told nobody about. The younger thinks it’s a dream, the older said if this is a dream then it has lasted 60 years, and we can’t worry about whether it is a dream or not, we just have to accept what is happening right now. The younger then asks, if we met before, why don’t you remember? And he responded that sometimes when things are too strange to understand, we simply forget them. He concluded that “I believe the encounter was real, but the conversation was a dream which is why I am not able to remember. I talked to him in waking and every day I am tormented to remember.” |
