Giovanni Pettinato (Troina, 1934 - Rome, 19 May 2011) was paleographer in writings from the ancient Near East, specialist in the Eblaite language,[1] having contributed to the decipherment of the Eblaitescript, discovered by P. Matthiae in 1974-5.[2][3][4][5]
Pettinato graduated at Heidelberg, where he had studied for ten years. Since 1968 he was teaching Assyriology at Università degli Studi di Roma, and since 1974 at "La Sapienza" di Roma. He was emeritus of several associations in many countries (including the Accademia dei Lincei [6]), and authored several publications, especially about the Sumerian and Mesopotamian civilizations.[7]
