Starkenburg owes its name to the castle Starkenburg which was since 1125 residence of the [[County of Sponheim]]-Starkenburg or Rear County of Sponheim. In 1350 castle [[Grevenburg]] was built by [[Johann III, Count of Sponheim-Starkenburg]] and became the new residence of the counts. Castle Starkenburg remained in use by the Palatine Counts to Sponheim, joint rulers of the County of Sponheim. So for instance [[Johann I, Count Palatine of Simmern]] was born and died in the castle which remained in use as widow residence for his wife. |

Starkenburg is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich, in Rhineland-Palatinate, in western Germany.
History
Starkenburg owes its name to the castle Starkenburg which was since 1125 residence of the County of Sponheim-Starkenburg or Rear County of Sponheim.
