Sebastian

SebastiAn (born Sebastian Akchoté) is a French electro artist whose reputation started with his first releases on Ed Banger Records in 2005 entitled 'Smoking Kills' & 'H.A.L.'. A string of remixes followed including Annie, Daft Punk, Cut Copy, Revl9n & label-mate Uffie. Summer 2006 saw the release of the 'Ross Ross Ross' EP, as well as a remix for Kelis. His remix of Kavinsky's Testarossa Autodrive, titled Testarossa (SebastiAn Remix), is featured in the video game GTA IV. His song 'Walkman' also has appeared in bumps for the Cartoon Network block 'You Are Here'. He was born Sebastian Akchoté, in Boulogne, France while his family are Bosnian Serbs. He started producing music with machines at the age of 15, with two members of the Rap band Cercle Vicieux. His brother Noel is a well-known experimental jazz guitar player.

In 2007, Sebastian completed the soundtrack to label mate Mr. Oizo's feature film Steak. Along with Oizo, he also worked with fellow Frenchman Sebastien Tellier.

In the 6th March Ed Banger Records newsletter, it was announced that he would be playing his first live set on an exclusive performance at Sonar Festival in Barcelona. The festival will take place in the end of June 2009.

Musical Style

Perhaps the most unique element of SebastiAn's music is a strong thread of Futurism, the early 20th century artistic movement the influence of which pervades modern dance music. Though his music is mostly alyrical, it suggests machinery, speed and, vaguely, death. These themes are most prominent in a recent track, Motor, which makes extensive use of what sounds like an engine revving up. In general his tracks are rather abrasive, fast and rhythmically volatile, all consistent with a Futurist aesthetic. A visual expression of Futurist themes is found in the cover art for "Motor, Momy, Army" a car engine rendered in black and white.
