Lowepro is an international company that produces bags for imaging equipment and consumer electronics. Their premiere product line caters to professional photographers and photojournalists but, they also provide a number of product options for consumer use.
The brand began in 1967 when climber, Greg Lowe, invented the world’s first internal frame backpack in his Colorado work shed.[citation needed]In 1972, Lowe introduced the first foam padded, soft-sided camera bag. Lowepro / Lowe Alpine have also been responsible for the introduction of plastic buckles, compression straps, and stabilizers which are now standard in most modern back packs.[citation needed] Lowepro distributes products in 107 countries. Lowepro’s worldwide headquarters are located in Sebastopol, CA, with offices in Australia, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Environmental Responsibility
Lowepro supports a variety of organizations including Amazon Watch, The Conservation Alliance, Native Planet, Raincoast Conservation Society, and Polar Bears International (PBI).
In 1996, Lowepro learned about a potentially endangered species of bear called the Kermode Bear, also known as the "Spirit Bear." This genetically-unique subspecies of bear can be found throughout the valleys of the central coast of British Columbia. Their environment was swiftly becoming eradicated by clear cut logging. Lowepro took action to help lead the campaign to save the Spirit Bear by driving awareness and shining a spotlight on the cause. In April 2001, the Canadian government responded by establishing a 500,000 acre protection area and banned logging in significant valleys of the Great Bear Rainforest.
In 2007, it established a philanthropic partnership with Polar Bears International (PBI), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the polar bear through education about global warming and its devastating effects on the species. The company donates a portion of their sales to PBI.
