The Municipality of Quito (Municipio de Quito) (full name until 1993: Ilustre Municipio de Quito (IMQ); full name after 1993: Municipio del Distrito Metropolitano de Quito (DMQ)) is the municipality of both the city of Quito and of Quito Canton (since 1993 also known as Quito Metropolitan District).

Governance

The government of the municipality is a mayor-council government, composed of two organs:

  • The mayoralty of Quito (Alcaldía de Quito), lead by a mayor and a vice-mayor
  • A city council (concejo (municipal)), as of 2008 composed of 15 council members

Since the 2000s, the city's administration is divided into eleven zonal administrations, five of them inside the city and the other six in the rural parts of the canton. The zones themselves are divided into municipal parishes.
