Daniil Ostrogski (? - after 1366) was probably Prince of Turov, first Prince of Ostrog, founder of Ostrogski House.
Biography
It`s not clear whether he was descendant of Pinsk-Turov or Galicia-Volhynia branch of Rurikid Dynasty. Some scholars claim that his grandfather was Vasilko Romanovich, Prince of Slonim and direct descendant of Roman of Galicia, others however claim his origin in line of Sviatopolk II of Kiev and supose that his father was Daniil Dmitrievich[1]. Kasper Niesiecki, XVIIage writer, repots that "Daniil Vasilievich, son of Daniel of Galicia`s brother, first started to call himselve Prince of Ostrog".[2] He could be also direct grandson of Daniel of Galicia and son of Mstislav Danilovich.[3] Adam Naruszewicz wrote that Daniel Ostrogski was Przemyśl starost, officer of Casimir III the Great when he inherited Galicia after Boleslaw-Yuri II of Galicia died.[4]. Daniel was probably only temporary supporting King Casimir, becouse in 1344 called Tatars to fight for Galicia[5], like Dymitr Detko who died in the same year. Finally Prince Daniil allied to Liubartas who also rivaleized for Galicia with Tatars, Poles and Hungarians.
He received Ostroh from Lubartas - King of Galicia-Volhynia and Grand Duke of Lithuania[1], where he rebuilded castle previously destroyed by the Tatars.
Was married to Wassilisa (?), father of Feodor Danilovich Ostrogski and probably Wasyl[6].
