Highland has quite the diverse student body; ranging from top athletes to musicians of the nation, Highland has set it's mark. Yet there is always one part of Highland that is overlooked by everyone--the administrators do not honor these individuals, and many of the students don't either. These individuals are the gamers. Next-Gen consoles have swept Highland. The time has finally come for the gamers of Highland to emerge from their shadowed, television-lit rooms, and for the staff at Highland to recognize these gamers as the creative and imaginative force that drives Highland to excellence. |

Highland High School is a public high school founded in 1994 in Gilbert, Arizona. Highland High School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School[1][2] in 2004.
Chess Team
Ben Marmont of the graduating Class of 2008, who is ranked 27th in the nation for his age group, leads the chess team.[3] He is followed shortly by senior Nate Cromer (uscf 1944 rating). Under their leadership, Highland won the 2005 AIA State Individual Chess Championship last year.[citation needed] The team scored a notable victory over rival Gilbert High School in the 2006-2007 school year in the Alhambra Invitational, marking the first time in many years that Highland has been able to beat Gilbert in chess.[citation needed]
Football team
The Highland Hawks varsity football (soccer) team took home their first 5A-I state championship, after defeating rival Gilbert High School in the State Championship. The final score was 1-0, with Highland's goal being scored in the first half by Sean Miller, of the graduating Class of 2008.[4]
Gaming
Highland has quite the diverse student body; ranging from top athletes to musicians of the nation, Highland has set it's mark. Yet there is always one part of Highland that is overlooked by everyone--the administrators do not honor these individuals, and many of the students don't either. These individuals are the gamers. Next-Gen consoles have swept Highland. The time has finally come for the gamers of Highland to emerge from their shadowed, television-lit rooms, and for the staff at Highland to recognize these gamers as the creative and imaginative force that drives Highland to excellence.
Highland FFA Chapter
Highland's Future Farmers of America Chapter has competed for many years with other schools and has done well to get Highland recognized. In the 2006-2007 year, The Ag Sales Team got first in state, as well as the Ag Business Team.[citation needed] Jace M. got second place at the Creed competition.[citation needed] The Soils Team came with a close second.[citation needed]
Music program
Highland High School's music program received national recognition when the Highland Marching Band marched in two nationally televised parades: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, under the direction of Eric Haenfler, in November of 2004,[5] and the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's day in 2001. Other accomplishments include marching in the Disneyland Light Parade in 2000 and in the Fiesta Bowl Parade and National Band Championship Competition in 1999. The school's Marching Band frequently receives ratings of Superior With Distinction[6] in Arizona festivals and often travels out-of-state to California and Nevada to compete in ranked competitions.[7]
The choirs at Highland often perform both in state and out of state at various festivals, consistently earning superior ratings. The Concert Choir traveled to New York City in March of 2007 to perform at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Craig Jessop as well as under the direction of its own director, Rita Scholz, as part of the Carnegie Hall National High School Choral Festival. The Concert Choir and Advanced Vocal Ensemble have also sung at numerous state and national festivals, including the 1998 MENC National Conference.
Highland's Orchestra program is also award winning, having performed at Carengie Hall in 2002. [8]The Highland High Symphonic Orchestra has also been invited to play at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago in December of 2007. Currently, Highland High School is the only school in Arizona to have been selected twice to perform at the Midwest Clinic.
Robotics team
Highland High's official FIRST Robotics team is The 39th AeroSquadron (Team 39).
In previous years Highland high school had been partnered with two other schools under the parent known as "Team 64 - The Gila Monsters." As the Gila Monsters, the school garnered numerous awards at both regional and national competitions in technology and innovation, as well as becoming multiple regional champions. In 2002, the Gila Monsters team took 2nd place in the nation at the FIRST National Competition in Orlando, Florida at Walt Disney World. In 2005 the Gila Monsters won 14 awards and were Regional Champions in Las Vegas [citation needed] as well as bringing home 2nd place in the National FIRST Robotics National Competition in Atlanta, Georgia[citation needed]
The 39th AeroSquadron won the Arizona Regional in 2007 and were finalists in the Las Vegas Regional. Additionally, they were quarterfinalists in the Newton Division at the championship event in Atlanta, Georgia.
