Stargate Worlds is a new MMORPG being developed by industry newcomer Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment in association with the film and television media company MGM. The game will allow thousands of players to interact in an online universe based around Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
Little so far has been released about the game, besides initial ideas and concept art, although one notable feature of the game recently released is that it will be completely canonical, adhering and contributing to the back story of Stargate SG-1. CME has posted on the website that the game is expected to be released at the last quarter of 2008. [1]
Setting
Stargate Worlds will be based on the popular science fiction show Stargate SG-1. Original plans were to run it in sync with the show, but the show was recently canceled even though 2 direct-to-DVD films are in the making continuing the storyline. [2].
The game will revolve at release around the Milky Way Galaxy, in the fictional storyline of the ongoing conflict between the Tau'ri and Goa'uld. Playable races as shown at this time will include Humans, Goa'uld, Jaffa, and Asgard.
It is expected that the game will take place in the earlier seasons of the show, before the Atlantis expedition and before the Ori story arc,[3]
"From the moment you login, you will feel like you are living in the same world as the TV show."[4] - Chris Klug, Creative Director of CME
Playable Races
Many races from the series were initially speculated upon as playable races. CME has decided to move away from the choose 'Race + Class = Character' paradigm and one's class will determine one's race.[5] Thus you will be able to play as an Asgard, Goa'uld, Human, and Jaffa.[6] As far as factions go, Jaffa and Humans will play for both sides while the Goa'uld and Asgard will play for the evil and good sides respectively.[7]
Asgard
The Asgard will be a playable race, with only one class. They will be a jack of all trades and use drones, as described in the archetypes section. This playable race does not wear clothes in the show and the design team made the decision to reflect this in the game. Rather than customizable clothes, the Asgard use robots. They're essentially the pet class and players of them get their fix from tweaking those pets.
Human
As a human you will have a choice between a number of classes. Put more correctly, as a member of one of these classes you will have no choice but to be human. The human archetypes are Soldier, Commando, Scientist and Archaeologist.[6] See the Archetypes page for more information.
Jaffa
Jaffa will be present as a race, there will only be one class (funnily enough it's called Jaffa).Cite error: A <ref>

(see the help page). For more information about the Jaffa see the Archetypes page.
Goa'uld
The Goa'uld will definitely be a playable race, again with only a single class. Other than the abilities listed on the archetypes page players will be able to switch hosts. There will be some sort of “cost” associated, players will not just be able to switch hosts on a whim.[8]
Expected Classes
Classes are called Archetypes *note that this may change or more may be added since the game is in development*
Stargate Worlds is breaking with the traditional Mage-Warrior-Healer triumvirate of fantasy MMO's.[6] The archetypes are somewhat different to those traditionally found in MMORPG's. CME says that they fit much better with the modern ranged-weapon combat system of SGW. There will be no specific healer class and everyone has the ability to be a medic, although some archetypes will be better than others at healing and reviving others.[9] Opportunity for specialization with in classes and the ability of more than one class to perform certain functions within a group, should lead to more flexibility in grouping. [6] A robust tech tree will make each class that much more customizable and replayable.[10][11]
Archetypes in SGW are a bit more flexible than in other MMO's. Player test out many abilities as they begin their character. Each archetype will have three specialization trees which will define a particular play style over time although players will mix and match skills from these.[12] No end game instance will need a particular class to be successful, although the developers have yet to rule out a particular play style being necessary for certain instances.[13]
The classes are Archaeologist, Asgard, Goa'uld, Jaffa, Scientist, Soldier and Commando. With some time till the game is released this class list and the classes themselves are subject to change. [6] Stay tuned as further information comes to hand.
Both the scientist and the archaeologist will excel in non-combat gameplay with various types of puzzles to solve and gain access to new and exciting advances.[14] In addition there are likely to be quests specifically for those and other archetypes.[15]
Each archetype will have it's own starting area. In addition to learning how to play the archetype this starting zone will also give the player the rich backstory that comes from 10 seasons of Stargate SG1.[16]
Archaeologist
As an expert in ancient cultures, languages the archaeologist has become a valuable addition to off-world exploration teams. This is the Daniel Jackson archetype. With their extensive knowledge they will be able to 'blend in with the locals' to gather intelligence or ambush the enemy.[6] It is likely that the archaeologist will also be able to engage in diplomacy, something discussed by the developers previously.[17] Archaeologists can also be quite adept in aggro management, perhaps by being superb negotiators or good at hiding, making them good solo characters, in addition to their ability to solve puzzles.[6] In addition to using their diplomatic abilities in PvE situations they may also be able to use them to advantage in PvP interactions, although how this will work is unknown. These puzzles will be in the form of minigames.
Asgard
While physically frail the Asgard are masters of technology and will have a strong science ability.[18] They depend on drone technology to survive and thrive. By calling upon different types of drones, to attack, defend, heal or analyze the Asgard becomes a true jack-of-all-trades. When faced with dire circumstances the Asgard can also bring in their mighty starships to devastate the enemy with orbital bombardments.[6] This will be a special attack.[19] By being able to fit into a number of different roles, it is likely the Asgard will choose their 'class' by specializing in a different type of drone technology. The Asgard will be a faction specific class, so no evil Asgard.[20]
Goa'uld
Goa'uld will be more powerful than other players in the game.[21] Whether players will be able to reach the level of power and influence of a System Lord is unknown. How these powerful Goa'uld will be balanced in PvP, and indeed how PvP will be balanced in general has not been revealed. The Goa'uld will gain much of their power from their servants. From the TV series we see how Goa'uld such as Hathor and Seth can easily seduce new servants with powerful chemicals. With the ability to command several different types of minions the Goa'uld can become almost as versatile as the Asgard. These minions will include Jaffa and possibly human servants.[22] In addition to their minions Goa'uld also have access to poisons that can be used to cripple enemies. They can also specialize in Ashrak technologies, such as phase cloaking, becoming masters of stealthy attacks.[6] As the evil counterparts to the Asgard the Goa'uld may be able to call in their Ha'tak motherships to bombard the enemy as a special attack.[23] The Goa'uld character will be the symbiote and players will, at times and at a "cost", be able to choose to enter a new host. However player Goa'uld will not be able to take over other players.[24][25]
CME has come out and said that the Goa'uld will be a faction specific class.[20] Tok'ra at this stage will not be a playable race. But this could change.
Jaffa
Jaffa in the game are like Jaffa in the show: big and tough. In addition to it's devastating ranged attack, the Jaffa staff weapon can also be used in melee combat. Displaying excellent solidarity and teamwork, Jaffa can use their oaths to strengthen their allies, especially other Jaffa. With their great physical strength, Jaffa are highly resistant to special attacks and can continue fighting even when injured.[6]
Scientist
Being a combination of pure scientist and engineer [15] this is the Sam Carter Archetype. When exploring new worlds this class is definitely handy to have on hand if you encounter advanced technology. Scientists can specialize in analyzing, repairing and using technologies. They can also use new technologies to craft personal upgrades. Their battlefield utility comes from the ability to construct devices such as gun turrets, shields and target inhibitors. They can also specialize in healing and resurrection technology. Like the archaeologist the scientist can also solve puzzles but of a technological nature.[6] These puzzles will be in the form of minigames.
Soldier
As a battlefield veteran the soldier is your best protection when stepping through the stargate. With the ability to specialize in a variety of weapons including grenades, automatic weapons, machine guns, mortars and rocket launchers. Their job is to unleash firepower into enemies. With additional training they can also learn basic healing, how to use alien weaponry and lead teams.[6] The Soldier will be able to specialize in Command, Automatic Weapons and Heavy Weapons. Command skills will allow the player limited use of healing technologies and skills to increase team performance. Heavy and Automatic Weapons skills will increase a players performance with each of these weapons classes.[26]
Commando
By giving up access to the variety of weapons a Soldier uses a commando gains access to stealth, demolitions and the sniper rifle. With these sneaky attacks the commando can disrupt, confuse and neutralize enemies. In addition to being able to stealth commandos also have technology to detect stealthed enemies. The commando will be at least one of the archetypes able to deploy and detect traps making them a valuable member of any team planning an ambush.[6] [27]
Ability to Change Class
While it is unlikely that you will be able to switch classes there will be up to 3 specializations per class.[28] Replayability will also be a major feature in the game.[14][15]
Expansions
In addition to regular content updates the possibility of expansion packs has been discussed. Currently there is no information on how much the expansions will cost, but as with the initial release CME will probably follow the rest of the MMORPG industry and charge a small amount for large expansions, but not for regular content updates.
Stargate Atlantis
The first expansion is planned as Stargate Atlantis.[29] Atlantis and the Pegasus Galaxy present much additional content, with at least 4 (maybe 5 or even 6) seasons worth by the time the game is released. It is ideal for an expansion and this is what the developers intend for the this facet of Stargate at this stage.[30][31][32]
Space and Space Flight
Player controlled ships will not be in the initial release.[33] However missions will almost certainly take players on board all manner of spacecraft, even during the massive space battles we see during the televisions series.[34] Players will even be able to explore the entire interior of a Ha'tak class mothership.[35]
Having player controlled ships has been discussed as potential content for an expansion. While some community members believe it may be included in the Atlantis expansion, the technical difficulties associated with developing space travel and the massive amount of content involved would lend player space flight to its own expansion.[36] There is also speculation that the third series of the Stargate franchise will be based on space travel, this would make the case for a space flight expansion stronger.
