This is a list of characters from the Golden Axe series.

Major Recurring Characters

These are the characters that have played a major role in more than one of the series' video games.

Ax Battler
  • Ax Battler

Appears in: Golden Axe, Golden Axe II, Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe

A Conan The Barbarian-eque muscular hero who uses a large broadsword. Ax's mother is murdered by Death Adder/Death Adder's forces and this is his motive in the original Golden Axe. His magical attack is ground/rock based giving the impression of nuclear blasts and once in Golden Axe II it was Wind based.

Battler is a brunette who wears blue trunks and boots, as well as silver cuffs and necklace. Box art for Golden Axe constantly depicted the character (incorrectly) as a blonde, often with much longer hair.

Ax was given a solo game for the Sega Game Gear titled Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe where Ax was charged with saving another kingdom on his own.

Tyris Flare
  • Tyris Flare

Appears in: Golden Axe, Golden Axe II

An Amazonian woman who uses a sword (though much smaller than Battler's). Her parents are both murdered by Death Adder/Death Adder's forces, leading her to seek revenge in the first Golden Axe game. Her magic attacks are all fire based, including the summoning of a huge dragon. Her 'descendent' Milan Flare is one of the playable characters in Golden Axe: The Duel.

Tyris' sprites depict her as a muscular woman in a red and white bikini and red boots with mustard coloured hair. Some box art incorrectly depicts her with wild dark brown hair and wearing fur-edged boots and bikini.

Tyris Flare will make a return in the upcoming Golden Axe: Beast Rider for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 due sometime in 2008.

Gilius Thunderhead
  • Gilius Thunderhead

Appears in: Golden Axe, Golden Axe II, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, Golden Axe III

Gillius has appeared in more Golden Axe games than any other, a white haired, bearded dwarf in green with a horned helmet he, like the others was often depicted erroneously on box art with wrong clothing and wrong colouring. His magical attack is lightning based although in Golden Axe II his magic attack was stone based.

Gillius, like his co-stars, is seeking revenge in the original Golden Axe game after his brother is murdered by Death Adder/Death Adder's forces and returns again to defeat Dark Guild in Golden Axe II. In Golden Axe III Gilius is the only character from the previous games to appear, though he is not playable, he starts each of the characters off on their quest at the game's beginning. When Death Adder returns from the dead in Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder Gilius rides on the back of playable character Goah throughout the game and sacrifices his life at the game's end to kill Death Adder.

Gillius Thunderhead is not the same character as the Gillius who appears in Golden Axe: The Duel, this is Gilius Rockhead, a decedent.

Death Adder
  • Death Adder

Appears in: Golden Axe, Golden Axe Warrior, Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, Golden Axe: The Duel

Death Adder is a tyrannical Giant who wears armour (red in the original, black/grey in his later appearances) who wields a large axe. After gathering an army he enslaves the location of the first Golden Axe game and kidnaps it's Royal Family. He is killed by the game's three heroes but resurrects for Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder here he survives an initial attempt on his life but perishes due to the sacrifice of Gillius Thunderhead.

However Adder appears to resurrect one more time some generations later and is the boss character of Golden Axe: The Duel.

Characters from a single game (main series)

These are the characters who appear primarily only in a single game in the series.

Golden Axe

  • Alex - Alex was a friend to the three heroes who only made an appearance in the arcade version, as the game begins Alex is seen in an injured state, unable to walk he uses his sword as a walking stick, then he gets beaten to death by one of Death Adder's own soldiers. Before he dies he warns the heroes that Death Adder has kidnapped the King and the Princess, then Alex suddenly dies. This character was meant to be an inline joke to Sega's then-mascot, Alex Kidd, since his popularity was fading out, and he would later be replaced by Sonic the Hedgehog.
  • The King & Princess - One of main reasons why the heroes are on the quest to stop Death Adder and his forces is mainly because the King & his daughter, the Princess have been kiddnapped by Death Adder himself. After defeating Death Adder the heroes set them both free and the King honors the heroes for their great bravery.
  • Death Bringer - In the Sega Mega Drive version of the game, Death Adder's actions are being directed from another character known as Death Bringer, the King and Princess tell the heroes that he is still in the castle and as the heroes finally find him he can be seen seated on his throne. Death Bringer is basically a palette swap of Death Adder and this extra quest was added due to the loss of most of the animation from the arcade version.

Golden Axe II

  • Dark Guld - In the beginning prologue it explains that Dark Guld is the Lord of Darkness, who should have been imprisoned in the ancient times but managed to arose again. Like Death Adder before him he sent his own forces to invade the peaceful land and Dark Guld was able to obtain the magical golden axe. Dark Guld's magical abilities include creating three skeletons and can use any of the heroes most powerful magic spells against them.

Golden Axe III

  • Kain Grinder - A character similar to Ax Battler.
  • Sarah Barn - A character similar to Tyris Flare.
  • Chronos "Evil" Lait - A black panther man.
  • Braoude Cragger
  • Hellbringer - Also known as the Prince of Darkness, he is the main villain of Golden Axe III and is the one responsible for giving the curse of corruption to all of the heroes.

Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder

  • Sternblade - Sternblade is a stereotypical warrior, much like Ax Battler before him. His magical power is a storm of flames which can burn the weakest enemies alive.
  • Dora - Dora is a female Centaur who has long blonde hair and her magic power is lightning. Note that when Dora gets on a mount, she magically becomes fully human and when she gets off a mount then she becomes a centaur again.
  • Goah - Goah is a big barbarian who can perform massive damage with his axe and his spell power is a giant skull that releases smoke that can perform huge damage to all enemies, however is movement speed is very slow. As already mentioned above, Gilius Thunderhead rides on Goah's back for the entire game until the end.
  • Little Trix - Little Trix is the smallest of the four playable characters, he has blonde hair and his weapon is a pitch-fork. The most interesting thing about Little Trix is that he is the only character in the series who doesn't use offensive spells, instead he can use his magic to create an apple tree that can be used to regain health.

Characters from a single game (side games)

Golden Axe: The Duel

  • Kain Blade - An orphan raised by 'a legendary warrior', exactly who is not known. He is the equivalent of Ax Battler and Sternblade in the game using a large sword.
  • Milan Flare - Princess of the region of Winwood. She is a descendent of Tyris Flare and is her counterpart in the game using a sword.
  • Gillius Rockhead - the great-grandson of Gillius Thunderhead who looks virtually identical and uses an axe.
  • Jamm - A young girl who looks to be in her early teens, raised by animals and protected by a wilderness spirit, she wears animal hide and uses large claws.
  • Zoma - A former advisor the king of Lustan, an evil region he is presumably corrupt or evil in some way. He uses a staff and magic to fight and has blue skin.
  • Keel - A blue haired elf and warrior who two small blades to fight and wears purple and blue. He is from the northern province of Crystal.
  • Doc - A blonde archer and healer from the island of Miribar
  • Panchos - A fat man in red armour who uses a large mace and various bombs to fight with
  • Green - the last of a race of half-man, half plant giants who has spiked fists, he is similar in look and weapon to the Soul Calibur character Necrid.
