Berlin Practical Philosophy International Forum e.V.

IDEA

The Association (e. V.) was founded in 2014 by an international group of international intellectuals, philosophers, and humanists. Despite their various backgrounds, they were united by seeing the humanities, liberal arts, and philosophy as important parts of the cultural heritage and promising ways to make contributions in many areas of social life. Their special concern has always been the promotion of philosophical ways of making individual life more interesting, better, and happier, and this is the reason why the term ‘Practical Philosophy’ is employed. Berlin has been elected as the centre of the activities of the Association members since it is a vibrant cultural and philosophical hub as such, and the careers of the members meet there, on various occasions, too. The term ‘International’ signifies that it is an open project, without any national or cultural limits, although English is its official language. Last but not least, ‘Forum’ refers to the conversational and pluralistic character of our proposals: we invite everyone who is interested in participating and support of our projects.

HISTORY

The Association has its roots in the American and European Values series of international conferences. The idea was conceived by John Lachs and Chris Skowroński in San Francisco, during Liberty Fund meetings in 2002. The first ten editions were held at the University of Opole and later, in 2014, the project moved to Berlin. Just after the Associated started, Maja Niestrój, its Chair, asked John Lachs for his permission that the association work under his patronship or Schirmherrschaft, as the German tradition has it.

The Association is an international project having participants and contributors coming from various cultural backgrounds. English, German, Polish, and Spanish are the main languages for its operation yet more languages are expected to be used in the near future.
