Formation of N’zema Kingdom

Sohie 1300 - 1400
Axiema ( old N’zema kingdom) 1400 – 1730
Beyinle (New N’zema kingdom 1700 )

After the end of the Ghana and Mali Empires the Akan state was established and at the end of the twelve century it was also in decline .
This brought about the movement of the seven Akan clans who made numerous journey to establish what we now know as Akan tribes like Denkyira, N’zema , Fante, Aowin , sanwi , Boule, Abron , Astante, Ahanta , wassa and rest .
All these states are described as the Akan clans who moved out of sikaso Mali, and formed their own individual states which we now called Akan tribes.
Therefore the history of the N’zema people , it’s language, traditions and culture cannot exist without the pretext of the other Akan tribes who are interrelated in terms of culture and traditions.
The history of the N’zema people begun when one of the Akan clans, a group called Sohie (Sohile) , established it own kingdom around the region of the N'zi river .
According to history, the Sohie people had their own kingdom and even had a common language. It’s was through this polite that the N’zema culture and traditions were founded.
The formation of Sohie and it’s decline was recorded around 1300 – 1400 , between this time polities like Abron or Bono, Wassa ,Aowin, Akwamu was on the rise , this also led to the rise of the Denkyira kingdom. This establishment and rise of Bono kingdom and the Aowin around the region moved the Sohie people between the Tano and Ankobra basin around 1320. There they founded Ngatakro ancient seat of the ebia (stool) of Elubo, notable as the center of the worship of the bozonle Tanoe.
There they settle and pushed their establishment down to the coast. Building strong fortified polities (cities/villages) known as sohile communities which belongs to the Royal family of the Ezohile clan .
FORMATION OF AXIEMA

By 1400’s one of the polities of sohie communities Axiema has grown bigger and larger in size and power , this become the head quarters of the Sohie communities, hence the newly Nzema culture and tradition was born.
As Axiema grew bigger and stronger her name replaced that of Sohie and begun a new N’zema kingdom.
Axiema, Quittrijri (Ngatakro/Elubo) , Axim, Azane , Ellembele, both Aboma ( Nzulenzu) and Tikobo2 claim their ancestry from Nana Takalika l of Nzulenzu ( but Tikobo 2 is not considered an ancient but a modern Ezohile royal stool ) all these stools belongs to the Ezohile royal family .

Axiema (Aziema/Ensumah/Ezemma/ Essiama/Essumah/Zenma) see Axim ( Aziem/ Axiem/ Essim/Esiam/sima) , these are the etymological terms which evolved to N’zema, which was also mentioned in ancient history with similar consonants.
The language the N’zema people all over the world today speak is Evaloe which is originated from the Ellembele district and not any other part of Nzemaland.
This clearly shows that the people of Axiema (Ellembele district ) are the founders and custodians of the N’zema culture and tradition.

Axim was one stool not two as indicated. The stool of upper Axim is totally Ezohile , and has maternal link to that of Axiema.
It’s was the Europeans who divided it into upper Axim and lower Axim , hence giving lower Axim to it supporters and to those who welcomed and gave them the land to establish.
This was because the Portuguese governor was denied access to land and trade agreement with Axiema and that became a big problem for the people of upper Axim since they were Ezohile royal family. The spelling of Axiema is the plural form of Axim which the singular of Axiema.
Axim is not different from Axiema in terms of culture and traditions, they spoke similar language (Evaloe) and shared a common ancestry .
It was not a separate district or polite nor was it a separate entity on it own, it became a separated district from Axiema because of the Portuguese establishment in Axim.
The boundaries of Axiema was from cape three points to the east coast and Azureti ( cape Appolonia) to the west coast.
Hence Axiema is the first N’zema kingdom (Nzemamale) ever founded, and there the founders and the custodians of the N’zema culture and traditions were born.
By 1555 the Portuguese governor of Elmina castle in his letter to King John lll of Portugal, described Axiema as a republic of common wealth which included Azane, ellembele, Adwomoro, Awian, Abuma(Ahoma), Quittrijri, Choree, Gyema to the west of the Ankobra and Axim , Abokro, little Nkasa ( kpokezo), Adom polites to the east.

By 1585 the Portuguese built a toll on the Ankobra to collect tax from travelers and traders crossing the Ankobra river.

In 1650 the Dutch fiscael of WIC J Valckenburg also described Axiema as a republic of common wealth which included the above mentioned polities based on that of the Portuguese governor of Elmina and local account.

By 30th September 1652 J Valckenburg signed a trade deal or agreement with ellembele which was signed by King Nyanzu Aka of which the Royal House of Antowa Kofi Amkpoe of the Ezohile clan of Axiema ,Ellembele and Nzemamale today claim their ancestry from , though the earliest Ezohile clan ancestor is a woman called Emo Antowa who gave birth to the first major king of Axiema Ezoa Aka around 1500. Shortly after his death king Nyanzu was succeeded by his nephew Moke Avo Ausi , this records is till in Dutch archives.
By 1650 Ellembele has become a major polite or district which was replacing Axiema interns of trade and commercial activities in the region and had it borders from the Ankobra river to the east and Ekabaku to the west, but Axiema continue to be the seat of government until the beginning of the eighteenth century.
By 1645 two natives of Axiema , Menla and Koloko worked with two European companies as their aid and broker.
With Menla working for the Dutch company WIC and Koloko worked for the Swiss Company, these are recorded in the history of the Dutch west Indies company and their presence in the west Africa.
A Dutch documents dating 1657 inform as that a few decades earlier at the time of Dom Francisco Sotomaior was the Portuguese governor of Elmina, the people of Abuma (Ahoma/Nzulenzu) attacked the people of Adwomolo and drove them from the area of Appolonia district . According to local records these were not Adwomolo people but Aowin and sanwi people who wanted access to the coast in other to trade with Portuguese, these people were entrained by the Portuguese , whiles they were a treat to the local N’zema people and the establishment of Axiema.

Between 1711 and 1726 local events were influenced by the famous merchant prince of Kpokezo (today’s Kpulisi/ princess Town) one of the polities of the common wealth of Axiema known as Kone Kpole , known by the Europeans as Jan Conny, who was the broker for the Brandenburg company. He had the de facto control of fort freideichsburg and the two minor forts at Atinkyin cape three points and Akooda and ended up dominating trade in the entire region of N’zema and Ahanta.
He couldn’t have done this alone without the help of it compatriots Axiema and it surrounding polities like Azane, Ellembele, cape Appolonia ,Awaine and Adomolo

There’s also an account that during the reign of the Asante king Opoku Ware l, Asante and Wassa warriors attacked and captured Emu of Abokro a sohie community, a member of the common wealth of Axiema, who has a maternal linage with the Ezohile Clan of Axiema, his mother a native of Abokro and his father Aowin . Was sort after by the Ashanti’s after he moved to Ellembele to seek refuge with Aowin refugees, he was asked to return them to the Ashanti’s of which he refused, this brought the Ashanti’s and the Wassa warriors who have formed alliance to the shores of Ellembele and after weeks of intensive battle, Emu and his sister Benie was captured and taken to Kumasi as prisoners of war, this was recorded around the 1730.

The invasion of fort St. Anthony, the Portuguese establishment in Axim by the Dutch on February 1642 was in fact supported by the ruling class in Axiema who wanted to break away from Portuguese control of Nzemaland.
Axiema is the only polite which has ancient trade route both sea and inland in the entire Nzema region. Axim, Beyinle and Adoabo do not have inland trade route, they only had sea route and without the arrival of the Europeans they wouldn’t have had access to trade with polities like Denkyira, Asante, Wassa , Bonomanso etc .
Axiema is the only polite which had direct trade route to Takyieman and Kumasi to the north, shama and Elmina to the east and Krindjabo and Bassam to the west.

The position of Axiema is every strategic in the establishment of the N’zema culture and traditions (Nzemamale).
It was the arrival of the Portuguese which caused the decline of Axiema as an important polite in the Nzema and Ahanta region.

There was power shift from Axiema to Axim because the Portuguese built Fort Anthonio which became European district of the Nzemaland, but Axiema was still the center of administration for the local N’zema people.

By the arrival of the Portuguese in 1478, by this time in N’zema history, the culture, traditions, festival and language were already in existence. [[User:Matt Starking|Matt Starking]] ([[User talk:Matt Starking#top|talk]]) 08:16, 29 October 2022 (UTC)
