::I misspelled it by accident. It was hardly egregious. Furthermore, I created these categories in the hopes that they had more of a chance of staying if they were segregated off by country, state, region, etc. But clearly not. The fact that it’s considered "non-defining" is purely based off of opinion. [[User:20SS00|20SS00]] ([[User talk:20SS00|talk]]) 13:28, 22 June 2022 (UTC) |

Administrators' newsletter – January 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2021).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-enlists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.
How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Category:Neo-Nazism in India
Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2022_February_2#Category:Neo-Nazism_in_India. Hi, can you please explain your closure. This was a few users who are in denial of the existing sources and using Strawman to vote delete. I would like to get it undeleted or recreated. What are my options now? There are enough sources to keep it.

- @Venkat TL: it was my job as closer to look for consensus, not to research the background. 2 editors argued to keep, but 4 editors (the nominator plus 3) were persuaded to delete the category, and these included the last two participants, who had the opportunity to weigh all the preceding arguments. I therefore believe that I was right to find a consensus to delete, and am not minded to reopen the discussion. If you believe my close was wrong – not based on the evidence you offered above, but based on a fair assessment of the arguments made during the discussion – then please use WP:DRV to seek to overturn my close. – Fayenatic London 20:30, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- Are you offering to reopen the discussion? please reopen, so that I can present this evidence. Also can you guide me to the page that explains notability criteria for category? What do I do to prove that this is a notable category. These users voting delete are in denialism and censoring information, they are not commenting in good faith. Copying a cat
Hey there, I wanted to close the discussion on Israeli Jewish women singers per your suggestion, but I wasn't sure if there's a simple way to copy the contents of a cat. Any guidance? bibliomaniac15 01:10, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Thailand/Siam categories
Hi. A belated thanks for closing the Thailand/Siam centuries/decades/years CfD and sorting things out accordingly. I'm wondering, since Thailand is the broader term following the present-day name, would it be possible to have Category:18th century in Siam be Category:18th century in Thailand instead? I've been refining things into subcats like Category:18th century in the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which should belong under the present-day scope of Thailand but not the historical scope of Siam (which per the discussion is to be applied after the 1782 cut-off). Also, do you know if the year header template can be tweaked to avoid showing the inaccurate message, "Note: in 1782, Thailand was renamed to Siam"? --Paul_012 (talk) 13:26, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Paul 012: The usual convention for a century category (etc) is to use the country name that was in use at the end of that period.
- I can see your argument for renaming Category:18th century in Siam and Category:19th century in Siam to "Thailand", as parents for Ayutthaya Kingdom. I suggest you make a fresh CFD nomination for those two century categories, if you think it's important.
- Where are you seeing that "renamed to Siam" message now? I thought I had removed it. – Fayenatic London 09:51, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, sorry, meant to paste the link but forgot. I'm seeing it in year categories like Category:1774 in Thailand. The century cat name isn't that big a deal to me, so I guess I'll leave it for now. --Paul_012 (talk) 12:31, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
- I see, that's using {{Year in country category}}, which is somewhat intricate, and does not currently resolve redirects. BrownHairedGirl intends to do a complete rewrite of that set of templates some day. Meanwhile, if the "renamed to Siam" note is unhelpful, a switch could probably be inserted in the template to suppress that note using a new parameter, if it's worth the effort.
- What do you think of the current note "in the Kingdom of Siam−Thailand" in Category:1750s in Thailand up to 1890s? Feel free to replace those pages using the standard template. – Fayenatic London 15:07, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
- I guess it can wait for BrownHairedGirl's rewrite, whenever that is. Re: the description notes, personally I abhor them and see them as unneeded clutter leftover from Look2See1's huge mess of edits, which were never properly cleaned up and apparently have infected newer editors into thinking that's how category pages should look. But I haven't the energy to go after them. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:44, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Happy Adminship Anniversary!
could you explain this...
Could I trouble you to explain the purpose of this edit in my working page? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 17:51, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Jack Sebastian: sure! As a bit of housekeeping to clean up after WP:CFD, I update categories on user drafts when they get renamed. Some such user drafts are straight WP:COPYARTICLEs, pasted long ago and forgotten, so I blank those to avoid future maintenance. Others such as yours show that some work has been done, which at first glance may be useful. I hope that tagging it as a user draft and for merging may be a helpful prompt to finish a draft that you started, and to incorporate valid additions into the live article. It also puts the page into categories that may eventually be reviewed by others, as WP:COPYARTICLE states that such pages should not remain indefinitely. Does that make sense now? – Fayenatic London 07:40, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Categorizing ethnic groups and languages that precede their modern designations
Even though the current designation for that ethnic group did not exist until the 19th century, a separate Turkic Azerbaijani language and ethnicity evolved in the 11th century. The earliest Azerbaijani texts exist since the 13th century (and are highly mutually intelligible with modern Azerbaijani, when transliterated into the Latin script). Medieval poets and writers wrote in that language, long before it was called "Azerbaijani" or "Azeri". The relatively recent designations of long existing ethnic groups is also the case with other ethnicities, like the Slovaks or Slovenes. There are no clear policies in Wikipedia about this, hence, the problem. --Multituberculata (talk) 06:47, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Fayenatic london,
I just deleted a template, Template:Wrong AFC submission, that used to fill this category which is empty and looks like it hasn't had any activity (pages added or removed) in recent times. You closed this CFD years ago and I was just wondering if you thought it should be renominated or just treated as a leftover category used by a template, remove the Empty Category tag and treat it as a regular empty category? It looks like the reasons for concern 7 years ago are no longer relevant. Thanks for your feed back. Liz Read! Talk! 23:33, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Liz: thanks for asking. Please just go ahead and tag it as C1. Neither of the templates on Category talk:AfC submissions with missing AfC template lead to an active editor who should be consulted. Template:User AfC missing template should probably also be deleted. – Fayenatic London 07:57, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

Ismael to Ismail edits on 29 January 2022
Hey, just wondering why on the 29 January 2022 you edited the Ishmael in Islam wiki page to mainly say Ismail instead of Ismael considering the title of the page and the anglophone nature of the article. Kind Regards, NotAnotherNameGuy (talk) 09:10, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
- Ishmael is the title of the main article (as a bible character) and hence also of the page Ishmael in Islam. The usual and longstanding transliteration from Arabic is Ismail. I was reverting a series of edits by one or more anonymous editors, possibly from South Asia but editing in the Gulf, who were inserting transliterations using "e" instead of "i" without explanation. – Fayenatic London 14:32, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
- Would you not say that Ishmael being the English norm is reason and reason enough? As it has now lead to the page being a mix and match of e and i's Kind Regards, NotAnotherNameGuy (talk) 00:33, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

I hope you well. Take care, Liz Read! Talk! 05:07, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, Liz. I had left a note at User_talk:Alborzagros#Moths_of_the_United_States inviting the creator of the original category to improve the list, but they do not seem interested.
- I see that DGG accepted List of moths of China, but has not done the same for the sibling bare lists Draft:List of moths of Brazil, Draft:List of moths of Mexico or Draft:List of moths of the United States. – Fayenatic London 06:41, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- I had not noticed them, and will accept them. I consider them all appropriate articles if documented in the source articles If you send any to mfd or afd, please notify me. But, Fayenatic london , they wpuld be immmensely stronger and less likely to be deleted if you copied over some of the basic data--at least the family. DGG ( talk ) 20:01, 18 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, DGG. I merely created bare lists, using an automated tool to list category contents, as an attempt to retain some benefit from the extensive work that other editors had put into creating the former categories. I added a header line and categories, but will leave it to others to expand these pages into useful lists. I am indifferent to them being deleted if no editors pick up the work. – Fayenatic London 07:44, 19 April 2022 (UTC)
- I've just seen the parent discussion, which I think contrary to the manner in which biologists publish their work, which for general works does tend to go by country because they are typically funded by national museums or similar organizations. Just as our contents should reflect professional consensus , so should our organization. But I am not going to reopen the discussion, perverse though I think it, because I consider our manner of handling categories so peculiar that I decided 12 or so years ago that there was no point in trying to fight against it,& I have almost always succeeded in ignoring the field since then. . Had I seen how general it was in this type of article, I wouldn't have bothered. But maybe, just maybe, to show my disagreement, I will add one or two items of information to a few to show it's possible. DGG ( talk ) 17:32, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- For my reference, that discussion was Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2021_April_16#Moths_by_non-island_country. – Fayenatic London 20:52, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

DGG ( talk ) 20:06, 18 April 2022 (UTC)Places in historical regions
Shouldn't we explicitly include a section in WP:OCAT about historical region categories with (just) populated places? Marcocapelle (talk) 05:46, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- I think that would be a good idea. Can you find, say, 3 precedents to link to? – Fayenatic London 20:48, 20 April 2022 (UTC)

Speedy rename error
Hi, Fayenatic london. Thanks for catching my error on that speedy CfD rename leading to fixes like this! I definitely screwed that copy/paste/edit up... Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm glad it wasn't too widespread. Regards, 2pou (talk) 21:27, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
- Sure, you're welcome. Glad you could follow my short cut to fix it. Hope you didn't mind getting pings on the set of them. – Fayenatic London 21:36, 19 May 2022 (UTC)
Technical help
Hi FL
Pls can you help with a wee clerical task that needs the admin bit?
I posted it at WP:AN, but no response before it was archived to WP:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive343#Setup_two_{{Category_chart}}s. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:25, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: I think I did those as required. If not, do let me know. – Fayenatic London 07:43, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
- Many thanks, FL. I think it will be a week or two before they generate any output in the charts, so we will see then whether it has worked. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:16, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

CfD closing instructions
See Wikipedia:Village_pump_(idea_lab)#CfD_backlog_and_closing_instructions. Your input would be most appreciated, if only because I still have a few questions about the current text (as indicated in the proposal). Marcocapelle (talk) 06:14, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Categories
Hello, Fayenatic london,
We have three categories that have been tagged for speedy deletion, CSD G4, having previously deleted at WP:CFD. They have been sitting at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as pages previously deleted via deletion discussion for a while now. Unfortunately, the page taggers didn't empty the categories first.
Do you know of a way to empty them besides going through and removing 46 pages from one of the categories, page by page? I think you have mentioned Cat-a-lot to me before but I've never successfully used it, I found the interface very confusing. Can you help me out? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide. Liz Read! Talk! 04:24, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Liz: the easiest thing for one of these is to list it at WP:CFDW under the original CFD discussion date. – Fayenatic London 08:27, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Paul 012 and UnitedStatesian: all three of those (Category:Cardiovascular disease deaths by country, Category:War thriller films by country & by decade) were "X by Y" parent categories, and should not have been tagged in isolation. This morning I tagged the like-named sub-cats.
- For info, I am also going to tag Category:Deaths by myocardial infraction as re-creations following Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2015_June_21#Deaths_from_heart_attacks_and_strokes. Naturally these would not have come up as re-creations when 20SS00 created the pages, because of the egregious mis-spelling. – Fayenatic London 13:16, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- I misspelled it by accident. It was hardly egregious. Furthermore, I created these categories in the hopes that they had more of a chance of staying if they were segregated off by country, state, region, etc. But clearly not. The fact that it’s considered "non-defining" is purely based off of opinion. 20SS00 (talk) 13:28, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
