Havildar K Palani, VrC (3 June 1980 - 15 June 2020) was an non-commissioned officer in the Indian Army. He served in the 81 Field Regiment of the Indian Army. He was killed in action during the 2020-2021 China-India skirmishes, for which he was received the Vir Chakra, India's third highest war-time military honour.[1][2][3][4][5]
Personal life and career
Palani was born on 3 June 1980 in Ramanathapuram district's Kudukaloor village. He belonged to a farmer family. He joined the Indian Army on April 29, 1999, at the age of 18 years, after finishing his schooling. He went on to complete his graduation while serving in the Indian Army. Aside from being a dedicated soldier, he was a dedicated family person who carefully carried out his responsibilities towards his entire family, including his brother and sister. He had roughly 22 years of service by 2020, and had worked in a variety of operational areas with difficult working circumstances. In June 2020, just days before his martyrdom, his family finally relocated into their own house in Kazhugoorani, Ramanathapuram district.[6]

HAVILDAR
K PALANI
81 FIELD REGT.
Havildar (Gunner) K Palani was deployed in Galwan Valley (Eastern Ladakh) as part of Operation SNOW LEOPARD. On the night of 15 June 2020, the individual was part of a patrol of 16 BIHAR tasked to establish an Observation Post. In a close hand to hand fight, he fought valiantly and saved his subordinates from the aggressive action of the enemy soldiers. Suddenly, the adversaries outnumbered and encircled him. With utter disregard to his personal safety, he stood bravely and tried to defend his comrades even when the enemy attacked him with a sharp weapon injuring him seriously. His act of valour inspired other fellow soldiers to fight fiercely and resist enemy aggression. In spite of his grievous injuries, he continued to hold his ground resolutely and in the finest traditions of the Indian Army, laid down his life for the motherland.
In recognition of his act of bravery in face of the enemy, courage, and supreme sacrifice, Havildar K Palani is awarded “VIR CHAKRA (POSTHUMOUS)”.
