This page presents the proposals at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop organized by topic instead of by proposing editor. We are coming up on the proposed decision phase of this case, and I wanted to be sure that there are at least no glaring holes in the proposals. This is an open subpage - if the organization can be improved, please do so. I have avoided commentary here other than a brief neutral summary where the heading is not sufficient to the purpose, and I request that anyone else who edits this page do the same. Some proposals are included in more than one section. Ordering within a topic is vaguely straight down the /Workshop table of contents within each sub-sub-topic. - 2/0 (cont.) 22:12, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Proposed principles

[edit]

NPOV presentation of science

[edit]

Focus on reliable sources

[edit]
  1. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#When the science is settled - basic science is settled and should be presented as such
  2. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#The scientific consensus on Climate Change is relatively settled
  3. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Reliable sources - follow the most reliable sources, such as IPCC
  4. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Citations - weight by source reliability and prominence
  5. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Neutral point of view and sourcing - most reliable sources, not just WP:POLE
  6. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Undue weight - fairly represent weight of authority for each point of view
  7. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Unreliable sources - reliability evaluated per statement, no source universally reliable
  8. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Importance of identifying unreliable sources
  9. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Reliable sources 2 - evaluate reputation of source itself, author, and publisher
  10. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Use of blogs as sources
  11. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Questionable sources - poor reputation for fact-checking or overly promotional → only for self-sourcing

Accurate presentation

[edit]
  1. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Wikipedia is a General Purpose reference work - notable, referenced, and accurate
  2. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Wikipedia readers expect to get accurate information
  3. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Encyclopedic coverage of science - science presented in line with current mainstream scientific thought
  4. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Scientific focus
  5. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Accuracy of sourcing - reflect sources accurately

Intended audience

[edit]
  1. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#The purpose of a General Purpose Encyclopedia is to educate the general public - lay audience
  2. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Articles may be more than a definition of a subject - technical description + significant attitudes & opinions
  3. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#The determination of the primary genre of a topic is guided by general public perception
  4. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Scope - admit complexity and create introductory articles where necessary
  5. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Avoiding article bloat - hierarchical organization

On verifiability and appropriate weight

[edit]
  1. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#WP:NPOV is a distillation of all notable viewpoints, per WP:Due weight - expert consensus prominent, but also others
  2. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Social, political and economic views on science - cover without giving "equal validity"
  3. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Necessary context - context of how a view has been received is part of complete coverage
  4. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Articles presenting minority or non-scientific views on science - include context
  5. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Topic area for original research - context is part of presenting a topic
  6. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Science and NPOV - due weight in coverage and context
  7. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Neutrality, verifiability and appropriate weight
  8. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Neutral point of view - all reasonably significant views in line with authority of each
  9. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#WP:UNDUE and WP:VALID are integral parts of WP:NPOV
  10. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#WP:V defines necessary conditions - verifiability is necessary but not sufficient
  11. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#WP:OR, WP:V, and WP:NPOV entail that the factual status of a proposition cannot determine its assertability on Wikipedia
  12. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#NPOV is not negotiable
  13. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#WP:NPOV
  14. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Climate change/Workshop#Scope of the topic area - scientific and sociopolitical emphasis

Scientific point of view
