The beginning of evangelism is not based on spiritual duties. The effort was started because of requests J. T. Cremer, a leader of plantations in East Sumatra. He believes that the best way way to the area natives do not oppose and disrupt the efforts of the plantation is to preach the gospel and convert them. Cremer convinced plantation companies towards his opinion about evangelism and ask the Nederlandsche Zendeling-Genootschap (NZG) to open evangelism in the area of East Sumatra, with costs charged to the company-Automation plantation. The request was accepted by NZG and implemented in 1890-1930.<ref>{{cite book |title=A history of Christianity in Indonesia |last=Aritonang |first=Jan Sihar |coauthors=Karel Steenbrink |page=573 |year=2008 |publisher=[[BRILL]] |isbn=9789004170261 }}</ref>
