Elvy Ana Gabriela, a staff nurse from Hospital Lahad Datu in Malaysia is a known victim of this disease. She was chased as a child by a 3cm tapeworm and since then has not recovered. She has undergone multiple rehabilitation programmes to no avail. She is the only known person in the world to have been open regarding her illness.

==Possible genetic link==
It appears that family members of a person diagnosed with Specific Phobia have an increased risk of developing the disorder.<ref name="DSM"/><ref name="Kendler"/> Particularly, first-degree biological relatives of person with Specific Phobias, Animal type, are more likely than the general population to have animal phobias.<ref name="DSM"/>
